The high-aspect wing that made AXIS's Advanced Research Team range famous — 1099 mm span, 10.6 aspect ratio and 1144 cm² of area. It is the glide-and-pump size in the ART family, and the one AXIS's own community pushed hard enough that a v2 successor had to be built.

AXIS positions the ART range as its research-led high-aspect line, and the 1099 is the size that carried it. At 1099 mm span, 1144 cm² and an aspect ratio of 10.6, it sits between the 999's tighter turning and the 1201's low-end lift.

The wing runs on AXIS's Black Series and Advance+ fuselages and pairs with the Skinny or Progressive rear wings, so it slots into an existing AXIS setup without new hardware. Front wing only, it lists at $755 USD.

Pros & cons
  • Exceptional glide and pump efficiency for its size
  • Bridges prone, downwind and wing foiling on one front wing
  • Full carbon layup with the stiffness high-aspect wings need
  • Deep AXIS ecosystem — fuselages, masts and rear wings all interchange
  • High aspect means less forgiving in turns than a carve wing like the BSC
  • $755 for the front wing alone, before mast, fuselage and stabiliser
  • Long span is awkward in shorebreak and shallow reef
  • Superseded by the ART v2 1099 — check which generation a retailer is listing

How it surfs

Foiling Magazine's interview with the AXIS team makes the 1099's status explicit: the company had not planned a size above the 999 in the v2 range, but as they put it, "the user community made it very clear that the original 1099, possibly one of the most successful AXIS foils to date and Guinness Record holder, also needs a successor."

That history is the reason to consider the original 1099 rather than dismiss it as the older generation. The v2 refines the outline for looser roll and adds ultra-high-modulus carbon at the wing-fuselage joint, but the base platform — the glide and pumping efficiency riders bought it for — is the original 1099's.

In practice it suits prone surfers who want to connect waves, SUP downwinders chasing bumps, and wing foilers riding marginal wind. If you mostly want to carve tight arcs, AXIS's BSC range is the better-matched family.

Verdict

The glide-and-pump benchmark in the AXIS range. Buy it if you connect waves and chase distance; pick the BSC 890 instead if you mostly want to carve.

Frequently asked questions

What are the AXIS ART 1099 specs?+

1099 mm span, 1144 cm² of area and an aspect ratio of 10.6, built in carbon and compatible with AXIS Black Series and Advance+ fuselages.

ART 1099 or ART 999?+

The 999 turns tighter and suits smaller, faster riding. The 1099 has more area and span, so it lifts earlier and glides further — the better pick for pumping and connecting waves.

Is the ART 1099 good for downwind SUP?+

Yes. Its glide and pump efficiency are exactly what downwind riding rewards, though heavier riders often step up to the ART PRO 1201 for more low-end lift.

ART 1099 vs ART v2 1099 — what changed?+

AXIS gave the v2 a more tapered outline for looser, more predictable roll and reinforced the wing-fuselage connection with ultra-high-modulus carbon. The v2 is also optimised for the Black Advance+ fuselage range.

How much is the AXIS ART 1099?+

$755 USD for the carbon front wing from AXIS Foils. Mast, fuselage and rear wing are sold separately.
