The Pyzel Mini Ghost is a shrunken, chunkier version of the Ghost built with Koa Smith for smaller North Shore days. Pyzel lists it in the Daily Drivers family and offers it in round tail or bump squash, with the round tail carrying slightly less foam through the back half.

Pyzel describes the Mini Ghost as the result of work with Koa Smith, who wanted a short and chunky version of the Ghost for smaller North Shore days. The shape started as a 5'9" Ghost shrunk to 5'5", then widened, with a flattened deck and thicker, boxier rails to put the foam back in.

A modern beak nose keeps volume under the chest and forward into the nose. Pyzel lists a medium to standard rocker, a single concave running to double and vee, and a bottom that suits thruster, quad or five-fin setups.

The round tail is the tighter of the two options. Pyzel sells the same model as a bump squash for a looser feel in weaker surf, and the two share dimensions but differ in total volume.

Pros & cons
  • Extra foam under the chest from the beak nose helps paddling on weak days
  • Round tail and squash options change the foam distribution without changing the outline family
  • Manufacturer wave range covers 2 ft to 8 ft, so it is not a pure groveler
  • Thirteen stock sizes from 23.70 L to 36.70 L, plus custom orders
  • Flatter deck and boxier rails give a fuller feel than the standard Ghost
  • Ridden 3 to 4 inches shorter than usual, so the sizing needs care
  • No published independent test scores at the time of writing
  • Stock availability is limited to a couple of sizes at a time

How it surfs

The manufacturer positions the Mini Ghost as a board to ride 3 to 4 inches shorter than a normal shortboard at roughly the same volume. That puts a 75 kg surfer usually on a 6'0" toward the 5'8" or 5'9" stock sizes at 29.30 L and 29.90 L.

Pyzel states the shape is made for high performance surfing but is also friendlier for less skilled surfers because of the added volume. Read alongside the 2 ft to 8 ft wave range on the model page, that reads as a wide-window daily driver rather than a small-wave specialist. Compare with the rest of the range on the shortboard reviews index.

Verdict

A high-volume, short-length daily driver from a shaper known for step-ups. Verified specs point to a forgiving paddler that still holds a 2 ft to 8 ft window, and the two tail options let you tune it toward looseness or hold.
