The Pyzel Radius is the high-performance model that evolved out of the Bastard, the shape John John Florence rode through his 2016 world title run. It is built around a medium-to-high continuous rocker, single concave and a pulled outline for waves with real push.

Above-average to pumping surf

Pyzel describes the Radius as a board that loves to be ridden fast and loose in above-average to pumping waves. The continuous medium-to-high bottom rocker keeps turns snappy, while a single concave running the length of the board adds lift and drive.

The Board Store's rider review from Western Australia notes a deeper concave and higher rocker than the Voyager, giving the board bite on steeper drops and drive through turns. The same review reports that turns which would normally need nursing could be pushed harder because the board handled the extra load.

Pros & cons
  • Single concave and continuous rocker deliver drive through carves
  • Extra bite on steep drops reported by the Board Store rider review
  • Pulled outline holds a line in powerful, curved wave faces
  • Proven design lineage from the Bastard and Pyzel's world-title shapes
  • Not a groveller — the thin tail and pulled outline need wave energy
  • Demands intermediate-to-advanced surfing to get the intended response
  • Verified pricing found only on the Australian Pyzel store

How it surfs

The consistent message across verified sources is conditions-dependence. Reviewers rate the Radius highly when waves have push and curve, and explicitly recommend against it as a small-wave board. Surfers who want one board for average beach-break days should look at the Gremlin or a hybrid instead, and keep the Radius for the good days.

Verdict

Verified sources place the Radius as a genuine high-performance shortboard: drive and control when waves have power, and clearly not the board for weak, small days.

Board Store rider review (Western Australia)No numeric score""It has a deeper concave and higher bottom rocker than the Voyager which gave the board plenty of bite on steeper drops and endless drive through turns... I wouldn't recommend this board as a groveller but when the waves are on it feels like it wouldn't skip a beat.""

Frequently asked questions

What waves is the Pyzel Radius designed for?+

Verified sources describe it as a board for above-average to pumping surf with push and curve in the face, rather than small, weak conditions.

Is the Radius good for beginners?+

No. The pulled outline, thin tail and performance rocker suit intermediate to advanced surfers. Beginners are better served by a wider, higher-volume shape.

How much does the Pyzel Radius cost?+

The Australian Pyzel store lists it at A$1,099. Prices vary by construction, dimensions and region.

What fins suit the Radius?+

It is a thruster. The Board Store review session used Futures JJF medium fins in fun three-foot surf.

Radius or Ghost?+

The Ghost is the step-up for bigger, more powerful waves. The Radius sits slightly below it as a high-performance everyday-to-good-waves board.
