The North Shore of Oahu runs from Haleiwa to Sunset — a seven-mile stretch packed with the highest concentration of world-class waves anywhere. Winter (Nov–Feb) delivers North Pacific groundswell that lights up Pipeline, Sunset, Waimea, Rocky Point and dozens of lesser-known reefs. It's the biggest scene in surfing and one of the most competitive line-ups on earth.

Why the North Shore

Because it's the beating heart of surfing. Every winter, the entire pro tour converges on Pipeline for the Vans Triple Crown / Pipe Masters. Even without competing, walking Ke Nui Road at sunset with head-high Pipe going off is a rite of passage.

Who it's for

Advanced surfers ready for consequential reef, and any level of surfer coming to watch. Beginners and lower intermediates should surf town (Waikiki, Ala Moana) and treat the North Shore as a spectator trip in winter. Come back in shoulder season to actually surf the softer breaks.

Localism, etiquette and safety

The North Shore is heavily localised. At Pipe, Sunset and Rocky Point, the pecking order is old and immovable. Show up humble, sit wide, don't paddle for anything the local rotation is on, and never drop in. Wear a leash you trust, know your exit, and don't overestimate your skill — the reef is unforgiving.

Best boards for the North Shore

Winter: bring a step-up (6'6"–7'0" for most riders) for Sunset, Rocky Point and small Pipe, plus a 7'6"+ semi-gun for solid days. Shoulder season: your everyday shortboard is fine. For softer days at Chun's or Ali'i, Channel Islands Happy Everyday works well.

FAQ

When is the best time to surf the North Shore?

November to February is prime — North Pacific swells fire waves from head-high to 25 ft+. March–May is the shoulder season with smaller, more manageable surf. Summer is flat.

How much does a North Shore trip cost?

Aggregated across five lodging options, a one-week North Shore stay averages about US$2,180 per person (accommodation only), from ~US$1,100 (backpackers) to ~US$3,200 (Turtle Bay). Board rentals, food, and rental car are extra.

Do I need to be an advanced surfer?

The marquee waves (Pipeline, Sunset, Waimea) are expert-only. Chun's Reef, Ali'i Beach and Ehukai on smaller days are approachable for confident intermediates.

Is localism really that bad?

Yes, at the top spots. Pipe, Sunset and Rocky Point have strict pecking orders. Come in humble, don't drop in, sit on the shoulder, and don't paddle out on your biggest-day fantasy — the locals know exactly who's ready.

How do I get there?

Fly into Honolulu (HNL). Rent a car and drive ~1 hour north via H2 to Haleiwa. There is no reliable public transport for surfers on the North Shore.
