Nazaré sits on Portugal's central Atlantic coast, ~120 km north of Lisbon. An underwater canyon focuses North Atlantic groundswell straight into Praia do Norte, producing the biggest paddle-in and tow-in waves ever ridden. For visitors, the town is a spectator experience most of the year — but the surrounding coast (Peniche, São Pedro, Baleal) delivers proper day-to-day surf.
To see a wave you have to see to believe. Standing at the Farol de Nazaré lighthouse with 40-foot Praia do Norte reeling below is one of surfing's genuine bucket-list experiences.
Two audiences: expert big-wave hopefuls, and everyone else — travellers coming to watch. Confident intermediates should base themselves in Peniche or São Pedro and treat Nazaré as a day trip.
Peniche (Supertubos, Baleal), São Pedro de Moel and Praia do Sul on the south side of Nazaré town all deliver quality beach and reef surf across autumn, winter and spring. Peniche is the surfer's town — most surf camps and rentals are based there.
Bring your daily driver and one step-up. For softer days at Baleal or clean Peniche, an all-round like the Channel Islands Happy Everyday covers most sessions.
