The Mentawais are the most concentrated collection of world-class waves on the planet. This guide aggregates real traveler ratings, average trip costs, wave-by-wave breakdowns, seasonality and logistics — pulled from independent operators and editorial sources.

Surfex aggregates real ratings and prices from independent Mentawai operators (Kandui Villas, HT's Resort, Awera, Kingfisher, Vaya) and editorial guides (Stoked For Travel, Backindo, Barefoot Surf, Indo Surf and Lingo). Every link is Google-searched and live-verified. We don't accept payment for placement, and every score and price links to its original source.
The Mentawai Islands sit ~150 km off the coast of West Sumatra, in the direct path of Indian Ocean swell. A one- to two-week trip typically scores 6–12 world-class sessions across HTs, Macaronis, Rifles and Lance's Right — a hit rate no other destination matches.
Nowhere else on earth packs this density of world-class reef breaks into a single archipelago. From April to October, Indian Ocean groundswells hit the Mentawais with clockwork consistency, feeding names every surfer knows — Hollow Trees, Macaronis, Rifles, Lance's Right. On a two-week charter, scoring 8–12 head-high-plus sessions is normal rather than exceptional.
The marquee waves reward advanced surfers who can handle shallow reef and fast, hollow sections. But the archipelago also has enough softer waves — Nipussi, Beng-Bengs, Lance's Left on smaller days — that intermediate surfers can score without being out of their depth. Beginners should look elsewhere (Bali, Costa Rica); the Mentawais aren't a learning destination.
Charter boats chase the swell across the archipelago — if the wind switches or a new pulse hits, the boat moves. Land camps (Kandui Villas, Pinnacles Mentawai, HT's Resort) trade mobility for comfort: proper beds, real food, reliable Wi-Fi. Charter trips average $1,386 per person per week; land camps average $1,925. Choose charter for wave count; choose land for sleep, food and family-friendly logistics.

Bring at least two boards: a step-up (2–4 litres above your daily driver) for HTs and Rifles, and a performance shortboard or all-round like the Channel Islands Happy Everyday for the softer days at Beng-Bengs, Lance's Left and Macaronis. A groveler is optional — you'll rarely use it.

Average across five operators: $1,602 per person, per week ($1,050–$2,800).

The prime season runs April to October, with the most consistent groundswells in June, July and August. Shoulder season (March, November) has smaller waves and fewer crowds. November to March is the wet season — surfable, but variable.
Aggregated across five independent operators (charter and land camp), a one-week Mentawai trip averages $1,602 per person, with a range of $1,050–$2,800. This is typically all-inclusive: boat/room, meals, guiding and boards transfers. Flights to Padang are extra.
Charter boats chase swell across the archipelago, giving you access to more waves per trip. Land camps (Kandui, Pinnacles, HT's) offer better sleep, food and Wi-Fi, but you're locked to the waves near the camp. Charters suit experienced surfers; land camps suit families and mixed-level groups.
No — waves like Nipussi, Beng-Bengs and Lance's Left are approachable for intermediate surfers. But the marquee waves (HTs, Rifles, Macaronis) are shallow reef breaks that reward advanced skill.
Fly to Padang, West Sumatra (via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur), then transfer by fast ferry (Mentawai Fast, ~3 hours) or your charter boat (overnight crossing) to the islands.
