Modern twin fins — Firewire Seaside, Album Twinsman, JS Black Baron

Mark Richards' original TFX (Twin Fin eXperimental) template is the most historically significant fin design in surfing — it won four consecutive world titles from 1979 to 1982 and defined the modern twin-fin outline.

The FCS re-issue keeps the original outline and foil. Ridden as a straight twin, it delivers the classic speed-through-flat-sections feel; add the small trailer and it holds a hard rail more like a thruster.

Pros & cons
  • Mark Richards' authentic four-world-title twin-fin template
  • The reference set most modern twin-fin reviews are benchmarked against
  • Fits FCS Original (Dual Tab) boxes on classic and modern twin-fin shapes
  • Long base + upright tip = drive with hold, unlike keel twins
  • FCS Original system — will NOT fit FCS II or Futures boxes
  • Overkill on ultra-loose keel-twin shapes (use Modern Keel instead)
  • Divisive with quad riders — twin+1 is not a quad substitute

How it surfs

Best matched with modern twin-fin shapes designed around the MR outline: Firewire Seaside, Album Twinsman, JS Black Baron 3, Lost Rad Ripper. Most of these boards are shipped or reviewed with MR TFX as the reference set.

Only sold in the FCS Original (Dual Tab) system. For FCS II boxes, the equivalent is the FCS II Modern Keel; for Futures boxes, the closest analogue is the Rasta or Machado twin.

Frequently asked questions

MR Twin vs a keel twin — what's the difference?+

Keels have a long base and short depth for pure speed and glide (classic fish feel). MR is upright with a longer tip — it drives forward AND holds a hard rail. Modern twin fins like the Seaside are designed around MR-style templates, not keels.

Twin or twin + trailer?+

Trailer in for hold and thruster-like turning. Trailer out for maximum drive and looseness. Most reviewers ride the Twinsman/Seaside twin+1; keels tend to be run as pure twins.

Will these fit an FCS II board?+

No. FCS Original (Dual Tab) is a different plug system. The FCS II equivalent is the Modern Keel Twin.
