The Hyperfreak line is O'Neill's core all-round wetsuit — the 3/2 is a bestseller in temperate water, and the 4/3+ version is the same DNA in winter thickness. TB3 neoprene, TB4 Firewall lining, chest-zip F.U.Z.E. closure.

It sits below the Psycho Tech in the O'Neill hierarchy — same seam construction, but standard TB3 instead of the air-infused TB3X. Warm enough for most European and Californian winters, with a friendlier price tag.

Pros & cons
  • Best-selling all-round cold-water suit — proven in Californian, European and East Coast winters
  • TB3 neoprene is significantly stretchier than TB2 (Psycho One)
  • TB4 Firewall in the core keeps torso warm on long paddle-outs
  • Chest-zip F.U.Z.E. system is easier to close than most premium chest zips
  • Not the warmest 4/3 O'Neill makes — the Psycho Tech uses TB3X air-insulated rubber
  • Premium price ($459+) — mid-way between Psycho One and Psycho Tech
  • No hooded version in the Hyperfreak line — pair with a separate hood

How it surfs

The 4/3+ notation refers to the thicker torso panel — 4 mm through the chest and back, 3 mm through the arms and legs, with a slight extra torso thickness for warmth without stretch compromise.

Owner feedback consistently praises the balance: warmer than a 3/2, more flexible than most 4/3 winter suits, and easier to get in and out of than a zip-free.

Frequently asked questions

Hyperfreak 4/3 vs Psycho Tech — which one?+

Psycho Tech is warmer (TB3X air-insulated rubber, full-body Firewall). Hyperfreak 4/3 is stretchier for its price, and about $120 cheaper. Both use the same chest zip.

Is a 4/3 enough for winter?+

In water above ~10 °C, yes — with boots. Below that, add a hood or step up to a 5/4 hooded suit.

Difference between 4/3 and 4/3+?+

The '+' indicates a slightly thicker torso panel for extra warmth without adding stiffness in the arms.
