The Spaceship is the board Kelly Slater rode through his Kirra sessions in March 2024, shaped with Mike Woo. Firewire positions it as a good-wave model built for hold in the tube and long turns on rail, and it runs from 5'6" at 22.5 L to 6'8" at 44 L.

Firewire describes the Spaceship as decades of R&D from Mike Woo, who previously shaped the Great White Twin for Slater. Where that board took its outline from a shark, the Spaceship is a more conventional shape aimed at tube hold, rail turns and control in round faces from Canggu to Coolangatta.

It was unveiled in March 2024 during Slater's Kirra run, and Firewire lists it as his favourite shape for good waves, specifically reef passes, point breaks and clean beach breaks.

Two constructions are offered. Proflex is Firewire's carbon sandwich build with a 1.5 lb EPS core, a 3 mm deck skin and a Technorra carbon cage, S-glass on the deck and carbon lapped over the rail apex. I-Bolic 2.0 is the I-beam core build with high-density rail foam and a carbon strip inlay.

Pros & cons
  • Outline is drawn for hold in round, powerful wave faces rather than small-wave speed
  • Two constructions at two clear price points, same eleven sizes in each
  • Volume ladder is unusually complete, 22.5 L through 44 L
  • Proflex carbon build targets the top of Firewire's performance range
  • A good-wave board, so it is not the pick for weak or fat surf
  • Proflex adds USD 300 over the I-Bolic 2.0 version
  • No published independent numeric ratings yet, so the score here is an estimate
  • Fin recommendation points at Endorfins KSR, which is another purchase

How it surfs

Sizing is the interesting part. Eleven sizes run from 5'6" at 22.5 L to 6'8" at 44 L, so the same outline covers a light performance surfer and a heavier rider who wants a good-wave board with real paddle power. Most 75 to 85 kg surfers land on the 6'0" at 30 L.

Firewire notes Slater rides the recommended fin set in size Large in smaller waves and Medium in bigger waves, which is the opposite of the usual habit and tells you the board wants controlled drive rather than release.

Price gap matters. The I-Bolic 2.0 sits at USD 995 and Proflex at USD 1,295 for the identical dimensions, so the decision is construction feel and durability, not shape.

  • FCS II Mayhem (MB)Fast, tight-turning option when the wave has a pocket to work.

Verdict

A narrow brief executed properly. If your local is a point or a reef and you already own something for the flat days, the Spaceship is a genuine good-wave board with an unusually broad volume ladder behind it. Take the I-Bolic 2.0 unless you specifically want the carbon feel.

Frequently asked questions

Who shaped the Firewire Spaceship?+

Mike Woo shaped it with Kelly Slater. Woo previously shaped the Great White Twin for Slater.

What waves is the Spaceship built for?+

Firewire lists it as a good-wave model for reef passes, point breaks and clean beach breaks, with an outline drawn for tube hold and rail turns.

What sizes does the Spaceship come in?+

Eleven sizes from 5'6" at 22.5 L to 6'8" at 44 L, with the same range offered in both constructions.

How much does the Firewire Spaceship cost?+

Firewire lists USD 995 for the I-Bolic 2.0 Core with fibreglass lamination and USD 1,295 for Proflex Technology.

What fins should you run in it?+

Firewire recommends the Endorfins KSR set, and notes Slater runs Large in smaller waves and Medium in bigger waves.

Is the Spaceship suitable for intermediates?+

In the larger sizes, yes, provided you surf waves with shape. It is not a groveler, so a groveler or hybrid still covers weak days better.
