DHD's small-wave performance shortboard, rated by the shaper for waves in the 1–4 ft range. Medium-to-flat rocker and a squash tail make it an easy paddler that still surfs like a proper shortboard when the swell comes up.

The 3DX is DHD's answer to the everyday small-wave board. Darren Handley kept the outline close to a performance shortboard rather than widening it into a groveler, then flattened the rocker and squared off the tail so it holds speed through flat sections.

Stock dimensions run from a 5'0" junior at 21L up to a 6'5" at 41.5L, and every size is offered in both FCS II and Futures boxes. Junior sizes list at $895 AUD; the standard range lists at $1,095 AUD.

Pros & cons
  • Genuinely quick in weak surf without feeling like a groveler
  • Reviewers report it holding up well in overhead surf, not just 1–4 ft
  • Wide stock ladder from 5'0" junior sizes to 6'5" at 41.5L
  • Runs as a thruster or quad in either FCS II or Futures
  • Not a step-up — DHD rate it for the smaller end of the range
  • AUD pricing plus freight makes it expensive outside Australia
  • Independent written reviews are thin compared with CI or Pyzel models
  • Flat rocker demands a cleaner line in steep, hollow waves

How it surfs

Surf 'N Show tested a custom 5'6" x 19 x 2 1/4 at 26.2L (rider 5'9", 160 lbs) over six days in waves from 2 to 6 ft, as both a thruster and a quad. Their conclusion was that the board handled the bigger end of that window better than the 1–4 ft rating suggests, and they recommend it for intermediate to advanced surfers.

That's the useful nuance with the 3DX: DHD market it conservatively as a small-wave board, but the outline is close enough to a standard performance shortboard that it carries into head-high-plus surf. If your home break is soft most of the year with the occasional swell, that range matters more than the headline rating.

Sizing-wise, most surfers ride it a touch shorter and slightly wider than their standard shortboard. The 5'9" at 28.5L and 5'10" at 29.5L are the two most commonly stocked sizes for average-weight surfers.

Verdict

A small-wave board that surfs like a shortboard. Best for intermediate-plus surfers who want one everyday board that still works when the swell arrives.

Frequently asked questions

What wave size is the DHD 3DX for?+

DHD rate it for 1–4 ft. Reviewers who pushed it further report it handling overhead surf comfortably, so treat 1–4 ft as the sweet spot rather than the ceiling.

Thruster or quad in the 3DX?+

Both work — Surf 'N Show tested it in each configuration. The thruster keeps it tighter off the top; the quad adds speed through flat sections in the smallest waves.

What size DHD 3DX should I ride?+

Most surfers go slightly shorter and wider than their standard shortboard. At 70–80 kg the 5'9" at 28.5L is the common pick; at 80–90 kg the 6'0" at 32L.

How much does the DHD 3DX cost?+

Junior sizes (5'0"–5'4") list at $895 AUD and standard sizes from 5'6" up list at $1,095 AUD direct from DHD.

3DX vs Sweet Spot 3.0?+

The 3DX is the small-wave board; the Sweet Spot 3.0 is DHD's travel and step-up shape for 3–10 ft. They sit at opposite ends of the same quiver.
