The Black Baron is JS Industries' cult small-wave weapon — an all-time-favourite hybrid that JS re-released in a refined third iteration. Wide, low-rockered and fast in weak surf, it's the JS answer to the Firewire Seaside and Lost Puddle Jumper.

The Black Baron has been JS Industries' cult small-wave board since the original Luke Egan collaboration. Version 3 refines the outline with a slightly narrower nose and re-worked rocker to add snap without losing the low-line paddle power that defines the line.

Ride 3–5 inches shorter than your standard shortboard, keeping similar volume. Most 75 kg improvers land on the 5'8 (30.0 L). Available in PU and HYFI 3 — HYFI is the reviewer favourite for the extra life it puts in a low-rocker groveler.

Pros & cons
  • One of the fastest boards in the JS line in ankle-to-waist surf
  • 5-fin box lets you switch between thruster and quad configurations
  • HYFI 3 construction adds real snap on top of the low-rocker paddle
  • Cult status — long waitlist history is a signal of demand
  • Wave range tops out at shoulder-high — needs a step-up alongside it
  • Low rocker can feel catchy in punchier waves
  • Availability is intermittent — sold in drops rather than steady stock

How it surfs

Wooly TV's review of the reset Black Baron picks it as the standout in JS's small-wave line, calling out how much better it turns off the tail than the outline suggests. Luke Egan's own summer-prep review video echoes the verdict — this is the JS to reach for when the forecast is disappointing.

Noel Salas rated the twin-fin variant (Black Baron Twin) at the top of his groveler shortlist. The thruster/quad Baron 3 sits in the same tier for aggregate impressions across independent reviewers.
