Channel Islands Better Everyday Review

The Channel Islands Better Everyday is Britt Merrick's 2025 evolution of the wildly successful Happy Everyday — a shorter, wider, more responsive daily driver with a subtle single-to-double concave, refined rocker and a modern squash tail. It keeps the Happy Everyday's ease of paddling but adds noticeably more speed and rail-to-rail snap in average, imperfect surf.

Britt Merrick built the Better Everyday off the Happy Everyday's foundation but tweaked almost every panel: shorter overall length, wider point pulled slightly further forward, refined single-to-double concave and a lower entry rocker. The result is a board that generates its own speed in weak surf and still holds a rail through faster, more critical sections.

Stocked in PU and Spine-Tek, with both FCS II and Futures fin boxes. Rides comfortably as a thruster and — for lighter or more skilled surfers — as a quad in cleaner conditions.

Pros & cons
  • Faster and more responsive than the Happy Everyday it replaces
  • Wide wave range from small mush to solid head-high
  • Rides well as a thruster or a quad
  • Extra foam up front keeps the paddle-power of the Happy Everyday
  • Newer model — some sizes still on backorder at retailers
  • Not a step-up: overhead/hollow surf calls for a Pyzel Ghost or similar
  • Premium price versus generic everyday shortboards

How it surfs

Editorial coverage from Stab, Surf Station and Singlequiver all frame the Better Everyday as a direct successor to the Happy Everyday rather than a totally new model — same everyday-shortboard brief, tuned for more speed and rail response.

For sizing, most riders can drop 1–2" from their Happy Everyday and hold similar volume. A 75–80 kg intermediate typically lands on the 5'10 (30.8 L) or 5'11 (32.4 L).

Verdict

A worthy update to the reference all-round shortboard. The Better Everyday keeps everything that made the Happy Everyday a modern classic and adds more speed and rail response — the strongest single-board daily-driver recommendation in Channel Islands' 2025 line-up.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Better Everyday replacing the Happy Everyday?+

Yes — the Better Everyday is Channel Islands' 2025 evolution of the Happy Everyday. Same everyday-shortboard brief, tuned for more speed and rail-to-rail response.

What size Better Everyday should I get?+

Most riders can drop 1–2" from their Happy Everyday and keep similar volume. A 75–80 kg intermediate typically lands on the 5'10" (30.8 L) or 5'11" (32.4 L).

Better Everyday vs Happy Everyday — which one?+

The Happy Everyday is the tried-and-true daily driver. The Better Everyday is a shorter, faster, more responsive update — pick the Better Everyday if you want more snap and speed in average surf, and don't mind riding a slightly newer shape.

Can I ride the Better Everyday as a quad?+

Yes. Britt Merrick designed it to work as either a thruster or a quad. Quad set-ups feel faster and more drivey in cleaner surf; thrusters give more control off the top.

Is the Better Everyday a good beginner surfboard?+

No. It's best for solid intermediate to advanced surfers. True beginners should start on a soft-top or a wider mid-length before moving to a performance shortboard.

PU or Spine-Tek construction?+

PU keeps the classic Channel Islands flex and price. Spine-Tek adds a lively snap-back through turns and better ding resistance — worth it if you travel, surf daily, or want extra pop.
