Futures pairs its Vector foil, which puts a concave surface on the inside of the front fins, with 3 degrees of extra cant and 2 degrees of toe. The result is a thruster set built to generate speed and hold grip deeper into a turn.

Futures explains the Vector foil simply: it is a proprietary foil with a concave surface on the inside of the front fins, which increases surface area, water attachment and lift.

The 3/2 part of the name is the geometry. Three extra degrees of cant and two extra degrees of toe introduce a twist to the foil, which Futures says improves planing angles in sharp turns and creates lift and hold deeper into the manoeuvre.

Cleanline Surf describes the same set as a speed-generating fin that maximises water attachment across multiple planing surfaces, with the concave and twist delivering grip and projection.

Pros & cons
  • Vector foil adds surface area and water attachment for extra lift
  • Extra cant and toe hold the foil engaged deeper into a carve
  • Alpha construction is light and made from recycled fishing nets
  • USD 80 puts it well under most performance carbon sets
  • A speed-generating foil can feel too lifty for surfers who like a loose, skatey tail
  • Only two sizes, so heavier or lighter surfers have less to choose from
  • Neutral template is a compromise rather than a specialist pivot or rake fin
  • No published numeric editorial score, so buyers rely on retailer feedback

How it surfs

Speed-generating templates suit surfers who already surf on rail and want more return from each turn. If your complaint is that the board bogs coming out of a bottom turn, this is the direction to move in.

The scimitar tip flattens the trailing edge, tightening the curve of the fin. It works with the lift the 3/2 geometry creates rather than against it, so the set does not feel stiff at the end of a turn.

Setup matters as much as the fin. On a wide-tailed board these can feel lifty, so surfers running them in small surf often pair them with a slightly narrower tail than usual. The surfboard fin guide covers how template, rake and area interact.

Verdict

A cheap way to add drive without going to a full carbon set. The Vector concave and the extra cant and toe make this a grippy, speed-first thruster, best suited to surfers who lean on rail rather than slide the tail.
