Mick Fanning's three-time world-title signature template — upright outline for down-the-line speed, PG (Performance Glass) construction for a locked-in, drive-focused feel. The fin most associated with high-speed rail surfing in the FCS II line.

Down-the-line speed, point breaks and reef

Mick Fanning designed this template around his own surfing — three world titles built on down-the-line speed, precise line choice and hard rail commitment. The upright outline and long base translate that DNA into a fin most riders describe as "tracking" more than "pivoting".

PG Pro is FCS's Performance Glass construction — stiffer, heavier and more locked-in than the softer PC (Performance Core) sold under the same template. The MF is only offered in PG Pro on FCS.com.

Pros & cons
  • Three-time world-title signature template with genuine competition pedigree
  • PG Pro construction locks in during long, high-speed turns
  • Upright outline holds a hard rail all the way through a bottom turn
  • Blue-chip resale value — MF fins hold their price on the used market
  • Stiffer feel than the Performer PC — less forgiving in soft surf
  • $30 premium over standard PC options
  • PG Pro finish is polarising — some riders find carbon accents look loud

How it surfs

Best matched with performance shortboards ridden in solid surf — point breaks, reef, or overhead beach breaks. Reviewers on Boardcave consistently pair the MF with step-ups (Pyzel Ghost, Channel Islands Fever) rather than daily-driver shortboards.

Buyers stepping down from the MF often move to the Accelerator PC (softer, more forgiving) rather than back to the Performer.

Verdict

The signature fin that spawned a decade of upright-template imitators. The reference drive fin for surfers who value line hold above all else.

Frequently asked questions

MF vs Carver?+

The Carver has a slightly more forgiving flex. The MF is more upright and holds a harder rail. If you want to feel every millimetre of your rail engagement, pick the MF; if you want a fraction more forgiveness, pick the Carver.

Is the MF worth the extra $30?+

For advanced surfers riding step-ups in real waves, yes. For everyday shortboarding in average surf, the Performer or Accelerator PC delivers 90% of the feel at $30 less.

Is there a PC (softer) version?+

Not currently. FCS.com only stocks the MF in PG Pro. Older PC versions exist on the used market.
