About Pukas

Pukas Surf was founded in 1972 in San Sebastián by Iñigo Letamendia and became the first professional surf brand in continental Europe. Over 50 years later, Pukas is still the reference European surfboard label — the only one of its era to survive and scale, and one of the few brands worldwide that owns its shaping, glassing and retail end-to-end.

The Pukas shaping team designs a full range covering everything from Chris Christenson's Water Lion step-up (ridden by Aritz Aranburu at every solid European swell) to the Balloon small-wave groveler born in the waters of Zarautz, the Performance Mood competition shortboard, and the Magnetic and Flying Diamond twin fins.

Pukas manufactures in its own factory in Anoeta, near San Sebastián, and operates the largest chain of surf shops in Europe — the Pukas Surf Eskola stores. Boards are also available through Boardcave (US), Sooruz partners in France, and Pukas' own e-commerce with global shipping.

FAQ

Is Pukas a good brand for European surfers?

Yes — Pukas shapes have been developed and tested in Basque waves, which are among the most punchy and variable in Europe. If you surf the French, Spanish or Portuguese Atlantic coast, Pukas is one of the shortest supply chains available for a high-quality shortboard.

Who shapes for Pukas?

Axel Lorentz is the lead designer of Pukas's high-performance shortboard range. Additional shapers on the Pukas team work on retro, longboard and mid-length models.

Where are Pukas surfboards made?

All Pukas boards are shaped and glassed in Pukas's own factory in Anoeta, near San Sebastián, in the Basque Country of Spain.

How does Pukas compare to Channel Islands or JS Industries?

Pukas is Europe's equivalent to CI or JS — a heritage label with pro riders and a serious high-performance shortboard range. Availability is stronger in Europe than in the US or Australia; ride quality is comparable to the other pro-line brands.

How much do Pukas surfboards cost?

New Pukas stock boards typically range from €650 to €900 (roughly $700–$1,000 USD) in Europe. Custom orders shaped in Anoeta add €150–€300.
