Having a family does NOT mean you have to stop going on surf trips. In fact, if you play your cards right, it means you can actually go on more surf trips. It all depends on how you look at it – is the glass half full, or half empty?
The following 8 destinations are perfect for young surfing family holidays. If you disagree, comment at the end and give us your 2 cents!
1. Bali, Indonesia
It’s no secret that Bali is home to some of the world’s most accessible surf breaks to suit all levels, meaning you can surf with the young ones on Kuta’s gentle beaches, then head to some of the more gnarly spots on the Bukit Peninsula.
And when you tire of the coast and its cliff-top temples, there’s a wild interior dotted with lakes, emerald rice paddies and volcanoes to explore, as well as plenty of yoga retreats and affordable spas to indulge in.

2. The Gold Coast, Australia
With stunning stretches of coastline home to beach, reef and point breaks, the Gold Coast offers endless surf potential for the experienced and gentle waves for the kids to hone their skills on.
Away from the beach the region is also home to some of the country’s most legendary theme parks – Sea World, Movie World, Dream World and Wet ’n’ Wild – as well as excellent cafes, restaurants and nightlife, all of which combines to make the Gold Coast one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations.
3. Honolulu, Hawaii
A chance to surf Oahu’s famed North Shore may be your mission on a Hawaii holiday, but Waikiki Beach in Honolulu also offers easily-ridable waves for the little ones.
This famed stretch of sand is always entertaining with long boarding beach boys doing tricks amongst beginners finding their feet for the first time. And with Honolulu’s Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium and designer boutique shopping all within a short walk, there are plenty of options away from the sand.
4. Punta Mita, Mexico
The Pacific Ocean serves up some great waves along the Central American coastline and on the Punta Mita Peninsula you’re surrounded on all sides.
You need a boat transfer to get to many of the breaks, but when the water is full of dolphins, sea turtles and even humpback whales, you can easily turn this into an adventure that the whole family will enjoy. The tropical fish-filled reefs here are also ideal for snorkelling, while the mountainous inland of the Sierra Madre makes for the perfect day trip away from the water.
If you’re keen to explore a little off-the-beaten surf track, then bundle the family off to Samoa where uncrowded, world-class waves are on offer at a number of offshore reef breaks, easily accessed by boat.
While they can be a bit challenging for the young ones, there’s good snorkelling off beautiful stretches of beach available and plenty of short jungle treks to waterfalls and rock pools that the kids will love. The Samoans are known for their welcoming, easy-going nature, fused with a rich Polynesian culture that revolves around family.
It may not have made a name for itself as a top surf destination, but when it comes to combining surfable waves with a family-friendly holiday, Belize is a little-known gem.
With powdery white sands and a distinct Garifuna culture, Belize offers a quintessential Caribbean getaway, with a little surf added in. The waves are reliable at an easy 3-4 foot height, perfect for the young ones to get acquainted with the board, but large, pounding waves aren’t unknown in the region if you’re after a bit more of a challenge.
7. Playa Negara, Mexico
It may be a rough 4×4 drive down a dirt road to Playa Negara, but that doesn’t stop surfers in the know from visiting this beautiful black-sand beach…and bringing their families along with them.
There’s a good fast reef break here to challenge experienced surfers, but the beach also has protected swimming areas and tidal pools for the kids to explore, as well as a tranquil and low key atmosphere, perfect for those who want a remote and natural escape.
8. Siargao Island, The Philippines
The beautiful teardrop-shaped island of Siargao is dotted with amazing surf, catering not only to those with years of experience, but also surfers just starting out.
Ride the famed break at ‘Cloud 9’, then take the family exploring the densely forested interior to wildlife spot and swim in natural rock pools. There are stunning offshore islands to visit with good snorkelling, and an afternoon hammock siesta is all part of the Siargao experience.
